When Johnny Pichler, the stoical money courier, turns his back on the safety of the West and ventures into the far reaches of Eastern Europe, he is following the summons of love. Instead of Shirley, the enigmatic blonde, he finds her twin sister Jana, the taxi-driver, and Ignaz, a hapless East German. On the run from the snares of intimacy, they embark on an odyssey of emotions which continues until the Blue Moon rises over distant Odessa.
