The Vienna Film Fund gives subsidies to film-producers in different phases of production:

• project-development (including script-writing)
• production
• distribution
• taking part in film festivals

Economic, cultural and artistic merit of the project are important. The European, and especially the Viennese or Austrian culture should attract interest in movie making. While producing a movie you have to spend at least 100% of the financial contribution of the Vienna Film Fund for film production facilities and skills existing in Vienna, employing local creative staff and filmmakers and / or having an onscreen-promotion of the city as a location. That is the so-called "Vienna Effect", a film business-effect, you must prove before getting a subsidy.

You can get subsidies for feature-films for cinema (projection time at least 70 minutes), documentaries and movies for children for cinema (at least 59 minutes) as well as for TV-movies. Funding takes the form of "non-repayable subsidies" or "subsidies repayable on success".

You can make the submisson for a project throughout the whole year, but there are deadlines. A jury that forms an opinion about the different subsidy-applications makes the funding decisions.
