Overview

Who can apply for development and production funding?
Independent productions companies with a permanent establishment or subsidiary in Austria and a proven track-record, i.e. a local and experienced production company. The company must be owned by EU/EEA nationals.

What kind of funding?
The Fund supports feature-length projects with mostly soft loans. We do not fund shorts. The VIENNA FILM FUND requests a regional effect of at least 100% of its support to be spent on local talent, creative staff and production facilities. Almost 80% of the support goes to Austrian or Austrian majority coproduction. Minority coproduction represents around 15% of the projects supported. The largest coproduction partner by far (90% on average) is Germany.

Selection criteria?
Ideally, when funding a coproduction it should be shot in Vienna or based on local content. Alternatively, projects with a very strong regional effect can also come into consideration.
Furthermore, we look into the artistic merit of the project: director, scriptwriter, DOP, cast and crew.

Who decides?

  • Theatrical: Selection committee meetings. They are held 4 times a year. Members of this committee cannot apply for support at the Fund for the duration of their term. The selection committee is made up of 4 members as well as the Fund's managing director. Its members are appointed by the Vienna City Counsellor for Culture for the duration of 3 years. Their mandate can be renewed once.
  • TV, distribution and institutions: Decisions are taken by the managing director.
