On the wedding of his sister, the fifteen-year-old South Tyrolean Andreas Gruber discovers the opposite sex for the first time: seventeen-year-old Italian Francesca Calzolari. But the young love does not get much time, because the next day Andreas is called to the front. Italy has declared war on Austria. The first world war rolls over Tyrol and the Dolomites turn into a war of the most bizarre scenes of history. The war in the mountains, where nature is the worst enemy soon torn apart, families, separating neighbors and dividing lover.
